About Us

This webpage was created to honor the memory and sacrifice of the 509th Fighter Squadron.

Our hope is to use this site as a gathering point for those interested in learning more about the 509th Fighter Squadron in World War II. Also, as a means to provide additional photographs and information regarding 509th Fighter Squadron members.

The site is a work in progress. As we are able to document more information via declassified After-Action Reports, Squadron Histories, Flight  Logs, and individual Personnel Files from official military archives, we hope to add and grow the site.

In addition to the above primary sources, we strongly encourage visitors who have additional information to submit anything 509th Fighter Squadron related: items such as personal narratives, journals, and period photography are of particular interest.

We have even been sent leather flight helmets that 509 FS pilots wore in combat, oxygen masks, and a 509 Fighter Squadron reunion hat!

So much of our documentation relies on photographs. Please do not hesitate to submit any 509th Fighter Squadron photos you don’t see represented here. We relying on you to grow the site!

The Art of Restoration: 'Chief Ski-U-Mah' and the 509th Legacy

It’s more that just genealogy research for those who are curious about their loved one’s service in World War II…

In December of 2023, we were fortunate enough to be contacted by Chad Hill of Django Studios. Chad was commissioned to paint Fagen Fighter’s recent acquired P-47 in the “Chief Ski-U-Mah II” livery flow by Lt. Duane Buholz.

We were able to provide Chad with numerous reference photos and additional background for his own research and preparation to begin his project. “Chief Ski-U-Mah II” now stands ready for the skies, a flying tribute to the men of the 405th Fighter Group, 509th Fighter Squadron.

Good show, Schooner Squadron!
